John has come to the Mission for years and has been on the street for most of his life. He suffers from mental illness and often when I talk to him, his thoughts are all over the place. He seems to have a hard time focusing on a particular train of thought for more than 30 seconds. But there have been a few times when his mind is more calm than usual and in those moments, he wants to talk about the peace of Christ. His eyes well up with tears as he talks about how there are times when he can feel God with him. He usually thanks me for taking the time to talk to him in those moments and reminding him that Jesus loves him.
At those times, I am reminded that Jesus is still doing what He did two thousand years ago when He would take the time to talk to the outcasts in society and let them know that their Father in heaven loves them. Just as Jesus was able to calm a raging storm while in a boat on the sea of Galilee with the disciples in Mark chapter four, He is able to be present in the midst of the storms in our lives today and say as he did in Mark 4:39, “Peace! Be still!” Whatever storms may be raging in our lives, or as in John’s case, in our mind, when we call on Jesus He will calm that storm in a way that nothing and no one else can!
