One morning I arrived at work, preparing to settle in for another day as Chaplain at Union Gospel Mission. I was in my office for about ten minutes when John came to my door. John has been on the street for about a year, after having lost everything due to a severe form of depression. He was obviously having a rough morning, as there were tears in his eyes and he said he really needed to talk. Mother’s Day is coming soon and his mother had died about five years ago. Her death triggered his depression, so he had been living on the street off and on ever since then. John was feeling very alone in life and wanted to feel loved again, as he was by his mother. His mother is gone and he felt like her love had left him as well. He thought things were hopeless and believed that he would never be loved like that again.
I then began to explain to John how the love that God has shown us through His Son, Jesus, is the greatest love to ever exist. Jesus Himself said in John 15:13 – 14, “Greater love has no one than this; to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command.” Jesus laid down His life for us on the cross, so that we could know peace with our Father in heaven through Him. And this love that we have in Jesus is always with us through the Holy Spirit, who Christ has given us if we give our lives to follow Him. I told John that if he does that, then Jesus has promised that He will never leave him. God promised us this in Hebrews 13:5 when He said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.” John felt peace in knowing that this is the greatest love, that this love in Christ will never leave him.
