The doors open for Union Gospel Mission’s morning chapel service at 11:00, but on Tuesdays, street guests can choose to go to the Bible study at 11:15 if they would like to. Susan usually chooses to go to the Bible study. She’s very attentive and contributes well to the class discussions. One day she stayed behind because the Bible study touched on something she was struggling with in her personal life. We had been studying the story of the prodigal son in Luke chapter 15. This story touched her because her own son had left home at 18, but not to go to college. Her son was addicted to drugs and was hanging out with a bad group of people. She had to kick him out of the house recently because he had stolen money from her for his addiction and she could no longer trust him.
The story of the prodigal son gave her hope that someday he may turn his life around and come back to the family again. The Lord used the class as a reminder for her to keep praying for him and that there is always hope in Jesus. May the Lord continue to use the chapel services and the Tuesday morning Bible study classes to remind people of the hope that is found only in Jesus. He is the only one who can really change a person’s heart and bring them back home.
