Happy New Year

Happy New Year

I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom:  Preach the word!  Be ready in season and out of season.  Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching.  2 Timothy 4 (NKJV)

Our New Year’s promise to you for 2015 is to faithfully preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and to demonstrate the love of God day in and day out, to fulfill the ministry the Lord has given to us.  And we boldly ask that you would pray, serve and give to the ministry with all your heart this coming year.

Our New Year starts today with a New Year’s (Christmas) Dinner in which we will preach the Word.  Then we will feed hundreds of street guests, who are the least, the last and the lost.  Join us today and pray for the souls that God is calling to Himself.

Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas

11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.” 13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying: 14 “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”Luke 2:11-14 (NKJV)

Merry Christmas from the Staff, Residents and Guests of Union Gospel Mission.  May the Lord bless you and your family on this day that we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ.

A Great Way to End the Year

A Great Way to End the Year

The beautiful decorations added to the festive occasion as we celebrated with another Charis Centre grad.  Deanna shared her amazing story of God’s working in her life.  She will be staying on for another year of growing in the Lord.  This should be her best Christmas yet!  Please pray Deanna will continue walking with Jesus in 2015.

Now You See It, Now You Don’t

Now You See It, Now You Don’t

You are looking at the fence behind our Christian Education Centre.  Someone else was also looking at it, and then they stole it!  Hard to believe, but someone cut off about 25 feet of our fence, and left the poles standing.  This fence also enclosed the playground for our elementary school, so we had to call in help immediately.  There are always unexpected costs when ministering in the North End of Winnipeg.  The children are happily playing outside again when the recess bell rings.

This is the Police

This is the Police

Winnipeg Police Chief Devon Clunis spoke at both UGM banquets last week.  Chief Clunis stressed the impact that one person can make in the life of another, and also the great things that can be accomplished when everyone works together.  He believes that Winnipeg could become known as the City of Peace, where anyone would want to live.  He received a standing ovation at both banquets.

Chief Clunis is moving the police force to address the root of our problems, not just the symptoms.  As he pointed out, this is what Union Gospel Mission has been doing for 81 years. He also believes in the power of prayer.

Let us pray for our Police Chief, and all of the police force, as they work to better our city.

Helping Hands

Helping Hands

Recently Union Gospel Mission partnered with MBCI and with Linden Christian School on two separate days of service.  Between these two schools, over fifty High School students and six teachers served willingly and mightily alongside UGM missionaries as they helped to exemplify the work of Christ.

These students did everything from sorting clothing and canned goods, to working in our kitchen and dining hall, to greeting our guests and handing out Bible tracts.  It was a great experience for all involved as they got to see and serve the least, the last and the lost.  As we shared about all seven of our ministries with the students, there were tears of sadness about those that are still struggling, and tears of joy as we celebrate the successes.

The ministry cannot do without volunteers that are willing to serve a few hours of their time.

Graduation!

Graduation!

We celebrated another graduation at the Charis Centre!   This dear lady was very thankful to many people for her success, but she was especially thankful to Jesus.  A lot of people came out to support her on her special day.  We were also praising God for five years since the opening of the Charis Centre.  The picture gives a glimpse into the event, though we are keeping confidentiality of the people.

Another lady currently in our HEART program shared some thoughts about the Charis Centre.  She had been in other programs, and none compared to her positive experience at Charis.  She feels royally treated in her private room, and she commended the excellent food and the loving staff and volunteers.  So in every way, it was a very encouraging night!

Pass the Turkey!

Pass the Turkey!

On Saturday October 11th, over 50 volunteers, staff and residents welcomed many guests from the street for a Chapel service and Thanksgiving meal.  Not only was the weather warm and sunny, but so were the hearts of our volunteers as they welcomed each one.

As our guests moved into the Chapel service they were greeted by the singing of gospel music.  They were then asked if there were any needs we could take to our prayer team, and over 25 individuals asked for prayer (from illness to family situations).  As the preacher proclaimed the Gospel of Jesus, many listened intently.
At the end of the services, 16 individuals either made a new commitment or a re-commitment to follow Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

Praise God and thank you to all who supported this bountiful Thanksgiving!

Movie Night

Movie Night

On the last night of summer, Family Life Centre held an outdoor family movie night.  It was an exciting evening, and the weather was beautiful.  We all gathered at 7:00 pm to watch the movie.  However the sun was not going down fast enough, so we decided to praise the Lord.  Families were having a great time singing old hymns such as Amazing Grace and many other favorites.  Popcorn and bottled water were available for that movie atmosphere.

When it was finally dark enough, we showed the movie “God is Not Dead”.  A wonderful evening was had by all 45 people that attended!  As we minister to people on the streets of the North End, we have been asked “what’s the next movie?”   Stay tuned for future movie night updates.

UGM Heroes at Birds Hill Park

UGM Heroes at Birds Hill Park

Last week, our chaplains took the residents for an outing to Birds Hill Park.  It was a beautiful day in God’s creation.  Suddenly, a frantic man approached them, asking if they had seen his 4 year old son.  They had to say no.  The men then moved to another area and began a Bible study.  In the middle of the Bible study, the lost boy walked right into their midst, crying.  With great joy, our men sent someone to find the father, who was searching with others over a hill.  What a great reunion of father and son, and great thanksgiving to our men, to God’s glory!  One of the residents related this story in our chapel this morning, and said this was clear evidence of God at work.

80 Years of Chapel

Monday to Friday (twice a day) and weekends (evenings only), a Bible message is served in our Chapel, followed by a meal served in our dining hall.  Over 50 churches and preachers share the Chapel services day by day.  Afterwards, they also take time to share with, pray for, and listen to the people from the streets.  Many individuals have come to know the Lord Jesus Christ as their personal Savior through these volunteers willing to give of their time.  And over 4 million meals have been served!

Something's Fishy

Something's Fishy

We received a call from the department of Natural Resources indicating that they had a few hundred pounds of fish that they had confiscated.  They wanted to donate some to Union Gospel Mission.  There was only one catch.  We needed to do the filleting!  The calls went out, and a handful of fishermen soon showed up.  On a Friday afternoon, we filleted approximately 400 pounds of pickerel and whitefish.

Because of gracious volunteers and generous donors, we are able to provide a variety of food to the least, the last and the lost.  If you have contacts that can provide us with beef, chicken, pork and fish, we would love to hear from you.

Charis Centre Grad!

Charis Centre Grad!

Congratulations to another Charis Centre Grad!

Rachelle's graduation was the highlight of my visit to Winnipeg!  The entire program was so heartwarming and encouraging.   Rachelle's story reminded me once again how God can work in our lives if we will just trust Him. I am VERY proud of her even though we have just met!  It takes a lot of courage to speak before an audience!
Congratulations!  And best wishes as your "Story" continues!!

I wish for you continued success for everyone at the Charis Centre ministry.  It was great to meet everyone and chat after the program.  I am looking forward to my next visit!!  Margaret

Life and Death

Life and Death

Our chaplain Scott received a phone call from a lady asking for prayers for her brother who had passed away.  She said her brother was a regular patron of the Mission and was present almost every day for the services and the lunch which followed.  Scott discovered her brother was a Christian, so he proceeded to pray for her and encourage her.  At that point, the lady asked Scott to do the funeral service.

After the service, she asked Scott to thank all of those involved with the Mission. She was so pleased that he had been able to come to the Mission, hear the Gospel, and enjoy meals with his friends.   She said he really loved UGM.

Thank you to all those who allow the Mission’s doors to be open, so people can be taken care of in this life, and be prepared for the life to come.

Bows and Arrows

Bows and Arrows

In the middle of Winnipeg?!  Yes, for the first time we know, boys and girls were shooting bows and arrows in Winnipeg’s North End.  And it was all under the sound of the Gospel.  This week, nearly 100 children could practice their archery skills, even though they were not at Bible camp.  Thanks to a special team from three churches in Kansas, these children could enjoy a safe activity, while hearing about Jesus.  We were happy to give up some parking space on Pritchard for this unique outreach.  Please pray that the children will respond to the Gospel message.

Happy Campers

Happy Campers

We are half way through our camping season, with over 1,100 campers registered as of today.  Once again we are hoping to reach almost 1,500 children.

Most of the children travel by bus to one of 14 Bible camps we partner with.  However, one of the camps had just a few children going from the inner city this week, so we took them ourselves in a couple of vehicles.  It was a great opportunity to visit and encourage the camp personnel.  It was also a great opportunity for the parents to thank us over and over again.

Please pray that many children come to new life in Christ this summer.

Charis Centre Shade Garden

Charis Centre Shade Garden

Last Christmas we began raising funds to provide a summer blessing for the ladies at the Charis Centre.  This spring, in faith, we started the prep work.  A generous local grower sold us high quality trees at cost and also donated perennials.  Another local company donated yards upon yards of soil, ¼ down and wood chips.

At the end of June, on a rainy Saturday, a youth group all the way from Saskatchewan volunteered 8 hours of time to help weed, dig holes, plant trees, lay landscaping fabric and spread ¼ down and wood chips.   All that is left is to get is a few park benches, and the blessing will be complete.

Thank you to all that have made this happen.

“Mommy, it’s so hot in here.”

“Mommy, it’s so hot in here.”

Even while God rebuilds women’s lives, the massive rebuilding of the Charis Center has been moving ahead.  The building was run into the ground by previous owners, and all the major equipment was not even operating.  We replaced the boilers, put in a new kitchen, renovated all the rooms, and put on a new exterior.  We purchased new furniture for the bedrooms and lounges. The cost has been over one million dollars.

One of our last needs is for an air handling unit to provide cool, fresh air to the center of the building, at a cost estimate of $50,000.  UGM sponsors are matching every dollar you donate, so your donation will be doubled. The women and children in the program have suffered through a couple of hot summers, but now the second floor is in use and it’s even hotter.

Please help us get this in before another summer passes. Send your donation to Union Gospel Mission, designated to our SO HOT project.

Thank you on behalf of the ladies and the little children.

Graduation Time

Graduation Time
We invite you to celebrate with us!  Four more students graduated from Grade 12 at our Adult Education program on June 30th.  We honored our graduates with a ceremony in our Chapel, which was beautifully decorated by our teachers.  Family and friends joined with us to hear the valedictorian speech from one of the grads, which gave glory to God for His wonderful help throughout the past year.  This dear lady noted that her son graduated from the program last year, and her daughter should follow soon.  A delicious banquet was then served in our dining room for all who came.

UGM is filling a vital need of education so the poor who live in the inner city can break out of the poverty cycle.  Over 90 students have graduated since we began.  They have each overcome tremendous difficulties, and many of their stories would bring you to tears.  We give thanks to Jesus that our graduates can now go on to college, or university, or to jobs.

New Life in Christ

New Life in Christ

The Spirit of God was hovering over the face of Family Life Centre at a recent ladies day program.  The day started with worship led by the youth band out of Heber Springs, Arkansas.  The visiting mission team’s rendition of “I’ll Fly Away” set the tone for the morning Bible study.

Mrs. Kim Anderson was teaching the ladies how to make Christ head of their home, and started the study by unpacking Jeremiah 29:11.  Mrs. Anderson continued to explain that trials will come and go, but we must always remember that God is seated on His throne.  The spectacular morning teachings would have been enough to call the day a huge success, but the best was yet to come.

After a short break the worship team prepared the ladies for chapel time with more music.  The Word of God was shared by a 16 year old student, on what being commissioned by Jesus meant to him (Matthew 28:18-20).  The only way to explain the power of the words coming from this young man’s mouth was the Holy Spirit clearly working through him.  Feeling the hand of God at work, I asked the team leader, Nick, to give an invitation after the young man had finished speaking.  There is nothing in this world that compares to the feeling of having God’s arms wrapped around you, and the sense of the love, that our heavenly Father has for us.  I am very pleased to inform you that 5 ladies received Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour that morning!

Thankful Ladies at Charis Centre

Thankful Ladies at Charis Centre

We were enjoying a time outside with questions and answers and then a look into 2 Peter.  Peter warns us to be sure of our foundation and then build on that foundation – our faith and assurance of being in God’s family.

The conversation turned to comments like this: “We need more Centres like this one because here I heard of Jesus and asked Him to be my Saviour.”  “We need more Centres like this so others will find Jesus and learn to put their faith in Him.” A couple of ladies shared their testimonies and were very enthusiastic about what they are learning.

The missionaries working here day by day are encouraged.  Through the many trials and struggles, they are having a positive influence.

Caring for the Core BBQ

Caring for the Core BBQ

It was a beautiful sunny Saturday afternoon as all the inner-city missions joined forces to help feed and entertain the core area’s less fortunate.  Several Winnipeg churches organized “Caring for the Core BBQ” as part of a Love Winnipeg event.  As we gathered together in front of Salvation Army on Martha Street, the live music could be heard from blocks away.  The large inflatable slide entertained the many children for the duration of the event.  Free haircuts were available, as well as manicures for the ladies. It was a blessing to see the floods of people go through the food line, filling hungry stomachs.

UGM was there to give spiritual help to the people in attendance.  It was a privilege to talk with individuals who were seeking hope, and to pray for them.  Our camp registrar was overjoyed with the fact she was able to register 12 children for summer Bible camp.  And information was available for our addiction programs for men and women.

Someone has said, “The truth be told, a Christian is simply one beggar who has received the Kingdom of Heaven, giving it to another beggar who as yet is outside of the Kingdom.”  We believe God sent some to us who qualified under Matthew 5:3 where Jesus said, “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”

The North End

The North End

This morning I walked to work, which means through the North End.  I was soon reminded of two summers ago, when I walked nearly every day.  There was the fellow with his grocery cart of empty tin cans.  There were the people on a bench asking me for a cigarette.  There was the man outside the bar asking me for money.  There was another man with one leg who was in a wheelchair, and he was trying to get into a restaurant for breakfast (yes, I helped him).  And there was the display asking for justice for Simone.  This display really touched my heart, so I grabbed my phone and snapped a picture.

So on the surface, not a lot has changed in two years.  But we know personally many lives that have been changed because UGM has been faithfully loving the poor and preaching the Gospel.  The cry for justice can only be answered by our Lord Jesus Christ.

Wedding

Wedding

Here comes the bride!  And the happy groom.  Sara thought that Harold would never propose, but God had another plan.  Gilbert, who oversees Family Ministries for UGM, relates how it unfolded:

Mom Edith is a long time participant of ladies Bible studies at FLC, and Sara is a graduate from the Faith Learning Centre whose daughter is a sponsored student at Faith Academy. Talk about a real family affair with UGM!!

I met Harold while I was doing my Friday soup ministry in Main street bars, feeding the patrons physically and more importantly spiritually.

Having known Harold through our school sponsorship program, I began to put the bug in his ear about the sacred covenant of marriage. After numerous encounters and constant encouragement. I showed Harold the importance of when one leaves home, and cleaves to his wife to become one flesh.  Harold proposed to Sara one evening after realizing it was the proper thing to do, for himself and more importantly in the eyes of God .

I had the privilege of officiating at the ceremony.  It was a small affair with 17 attending, but a very large event in the eyes of God!

Praise the Lord!

Praise the Lord!

This Saturday was our annual Easter dinner for the community around the Mission, and we had an amazing turnout! We served over 370 people, and had 40+ volunteers. The volunteers really served with passion and a smile today as we helped to minister and feed the homeless. Praise the Lord! We had 61 people accept Christ during the chapel services and 84 prayer requests were also made.  It was exciting to celebrate the Easter season with people willing to serve.

Elated!

Elated!

Don, one of the men living in our Men’s Recovery Program, was bouncing off the walls, walking on air.  Well, maybe a bit of an exaggeration, but he was pretty excited.  He had just led someone to Christ!  It continues to be a high point here in the Mission to see how God uses staff, volunteers and residents for His glory.  It is so easy to view the residents as those who are here to ‘soak up the help’ and this is another reminder that God works through all to accomplish His purposes!  How exciting it is to see men - those who are looking to us for help - desiring to be used of God to be of help to others!

With A Little Help From my Friends!

Richard, one of the men in our Men’s Addiction Recovery Program, advanced from Phase 2 to Phase 3 in the last week of February.  Part of the ‘advancing celebration’ involves the ‘advancee’ sharing a word or two about what God has been doing in his life.  So Richard, the ‘advancee of the hour’, was standing behind the podium, reflecting on God’s goodness on the road to recovery.  A significant part of his reflection was spent thanking those who have had a hand in his deliverance – his Chaplain, his Mom, his fellow-residents and the staff and volunteers.  What a good reminder that God uses people in the lives of others!

Motherhood…Through The Eyes Of Addiction

Motherhood…Through The Eyes Of Addiction

How quickly we can harshly judge someone who struggles with an addiction!  It is so easy to point the finger, yet overlook the circumstance that led to addiction in the first place.  The stories of how men and women entered that path are as numerous as the people themselves.

A lady recently completed the HEART program at our Charis Centre, home for ladies working through addictions.  She shared the heart-wrenching story of how her addiction cost her her children, and the anguish and torment she suffered in watching them be turned over to someone else to raise.  She desired to raise them but the addiction was too strong!

Thankfully, she has gone over a year, free from addiction and has been given custody of her younger children.  The past cannot be undone – but the future is looking bright!

2 Corinthians 5:17 – Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

School Scares Me But…

School Scares Me But…

Guy lives at Union Gospel Mission, seeking to overcome an addiction that has set his life on a course that looks considerably different than he once envisioned.  Today, he advanced to Phase 3, the last level in the addictions program.  As men enter Phase 3, they are encouraged to begin looking for work or taking courses to prepare for future employment.  Guy’s desire is to teach English as an alternative language in a foreign country, but he needed some further education for this.  In his own words, his addictions have led him to the point where the thought of returning to school terrifies him – even kindergarten!  Yet the Lord has given him the courage he needs and today, following his advancement, he went to university for day 1 of an 8-week course!

Deuteronomy 31:6 - Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.

January 1 – our date to serve up a full Christmas meal to those who call our neighbourhood home.  Despite bone-chilling temperatures, the warmth of God’s love was felt by over 220 men, women and children who came for a full turkey dinner.  Music was provided by the dynamic duo of Harry & Bernice Friesen, a spirited message was given by Walter Dorrington, and delicious food was prepared and served by staff and volunteers.  Thank you to all the volunteers (over 60 in all) who helped, and to all who donated to make the day possible.  The result?  Everyone was well-fed, 54 ‘patrons’ asked for prayer and…18 decisions were made for Jesus Christ!  What a way to welcome 2014!

Produce – pronounced two ways!

Produce – pronounced two ways!

A challenge was put in our path recently – challenging for us, but not for God!  Our delivery van is not refrigerated (although, it can be, in the wintertime!).  According to health inspection policy, we are not permitted to transport donated produce unless our van is refrigerated.  So, as with all challenges, we went to our knees – not to beg for a change in policy, but to ask God to provide.  And He did!  One of those praying called someone who was in a position to help, and before we knew it, the refrigeration unit was supplied and installed – all with no cost to the Mission.  The ‘problem of the produce’ was no difficulty for the God who can ‘produce’!

A Gift – From Ladies Who Have Been Helped!

The Charis Centre is a place where ladies who are struggling with the bondage of addictions can come for help.  Many of these ladies have paid a steep price in going down the road of addiction.  But, by the Grace (Charis) of God, many are finding deliverance!

These ladies desire to give back to the place that has helped them.  They have prayerfully created a quilt which they would like to sell, with all the proceeds going back into the Charis Centre, so that others can find the freedom that they have found.

For the next week, an auction will be held, and the highest bidder will be blessed in at least two ways – he or she will be the proud owner of a beautifully crafted quilt and…he or she will have helped the ladies give back to the place where they, themselves, found deliverance.

All the details of this auction can be found on our website.  Make your bid today and do your part to help.  The bid currently stands at $600.

2 Corinthians 1:4 - …who comforts us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort those who are in any trouble, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

It All About Christ – Not About Chris!

It All About Christ – Not About Chris!

What a difference a ‘t’ makes – that ‘cross-shaped’ letter!  Recently, in one of our chapel services, two men advanced from Phase 2 to Phase 3.  Each phase represents the completion of specific requirements and marks the continuing work of Christ in the lives of the men seeking freedom from addictions.  As it turns out, both men were named Chris, and both shared about Christ – the need to put Him first, and to trust Him fully.  Each ‘Chris’ is truly desiring to become more like ‘Christ’!

2000 Hours!

2000 Hours!

What happens when you get a group of eager young people wanting to serve the Lord?  Lots!  Youth from across western Canada converged on Winnipeg for SERVE 2013.  These young people, from the Canadian Baptists of Western Canada, included Union Gospel Mission in their ‘itinerary’, making us very thankful beneficiaries!  They put together furniture, sodded and landscaped, sorted clothing, prepared meals, cleaned – just to name a few things.  When all was said and done, it was calculated that 2000 ‘man-hours’ were given to the Mission in just one week.  That’s more than what one typically works in a whole year!  And – they seemed to have a lot of fun doing it.

UGM would like the thank everyone involved, for their willingness to roll up their sleeves plus the delight they had in serving.  May you never lose your heart to do things for the Lord!

Graduations Galore!

Graduations Galore!

The past 6 weeks have been cause for celebration!  It started at the end of May, when 2 ladies from the Charis Centre graduated from the HEART recovery program.  A year ago, both were in bondage to addictions, and now they’re ready to move forward!  Praise God!  And then, about a month later, 2 students, who we have been sponsoring, graduated from Faith Academy, having earned their Grade 12.  The following night, a graduation exercise took place to recognize three adults who had gone back to school to finish their Grade 12.  God is good – all the time!

All the graduates were thankful for at least 2 things – for the work of God in their lives, and for the role that Union Gospel Mission has played in their ‘success’.  And we thank you – for supporting our ministries through giving, praying and volunteering.  Isn’t it nice to see the fruit of our collective labours!

Galatians 6:9 - And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.

Paul Brandt – And The Charis Centre

Paul Brandt – And The Charis Centre

So, how do the paths of Paul Brandt, country music singer ‘extraordinaire’, and the Charis Centre, home for ladies recovering from addictions, cross?  Well, Calvary Temple teamed up with a businessman and generously donated tickets for the Just As I Am tour – and 14 ladies had a blast!  All of these ladies have had some very rough years, and to see them singing, praising God and having such a good time was, as they say, a beautiful thing to behold.

Union Gospel Mission is thankful for Churches, businesses and individuals who make these types of things possible for our residents.  Your generosity adds such a great dimension in the lives of those who are going through such difficulty.

Luke 6:38 - Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap.

Today’s Caring Youth

Today’s Caring Youth

On May 7th, a few hundred teenagers gathered at the Manitoba Museum.  The purpose?  To award grants to various groups that help those in need.  These children come from Winnipeg Schools and organizations, and are responsible for distributing money on behalf of the Winnipeg Foundation.  What a privilege to see so many young people with a heart for the needy, and to find such joy in being able to help!  While so many people find it easy to ignore the needs of others, what a delight to see those who have an eye on the needy at such a young age!  We’re thankful to everyone who took part, but a special thanks to those who chose to assist Union Gospel Mission as we serve our community.  And to all those young people – don’t ever lose the passion to help others!

I John 3:17 - But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?

We’re Floored – And Need To Be!

We’re Floored – And Need To Be!

Recently, a government inspector took a walk through our Family Life Centre.  He noted that our kitchen floor is wearing out – our volunteers have been working way too hard!  He asked that the flooring (which right now consists of chipped tiles) be replaced, but this comes with an unexpected price tag – about $3000.  Can you help us with this sudden need?  It will help our volunteers to be able to work in a safer environment, as they whip up those masterful culinary creations for ladies of Winnipeg’s North End.

Philippians 4:19 - And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

A Piece Of UGM History Has Passed On

A Piece Of UGM History Has Passed On

On January 22nd, a ‘piece of UGM history’ made the trip from earth to heaven.  Frank Koop, along with his wife Mavis, served as the Superintendent of Union Gospel Mission not once, but twice, back in the 1950’s and 1960’s.  (The Superintendent position later became known as the Executive Director position).  His 1st ‘tour of duty’ was from 1951 to 1953, and then he returned to serve again in 1958, and did so until 1965.  Of course, the Mission was not the only place Frank served – he pastored various Churches and served the Lord in a variety of ways.

A number of years ago, Henry Unruh, a former Public Relations Manager for the Mission, created a living tribute to Frank.  It can be found here - Stories from the Street

We were blessed to have Frank & Mavis serve the Lord through Union Gospel Mission, and are thankful for the love and care they showed for Winnipeg’s needy.

Philippians 1:21 - For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.

Coffee break? What’s that!

Coffee break? What’s that!

So, the office staff and a volunteer were hard at work – as we normally are, of course.  But then, the clock struck 3 – time for a coffee break.  We all shot out of the office – except the volunteer.  No time for a break!

How we love and value our volunteers.  What a joy to serve with them as they serve Christ – not for a paycheque, not because of a contract, but because there’s work to be done, and they just love serving Him!

Psalm 100:2 - Serve the Lord with gladness…

Back at it!

Back at it!

Sadly, our Children’s Clubs were put on hold for a couple of months, as we looked for a new Children’s Ministry Coordinator.  Well, he has been hired!  We’re happy to have Trevor on board, and the Clubs are up and running.  Up to 15 children are attending the after-school clubs on Tuesday and Thursday.  God, in His goodness, has provided computers for the children to use for their homework help, and, during Club time, children are learning of God!  We’re thankful that we’re able to minister to Winnipeg’s North End children again!  God never leaves anything undone!

Philippians 1:6 - …being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ…

Bring it on down!

Bring it on down!

MissionFest is just around the corner, and many are planning to take in a great weekend of Missionary stories, reports and challenges to partner in ministry.  This year, you’ll have a very practical opportunity to get involved in Missions – by Cleaning Out Your Closets For Christ!  That’s right – by getting rid of all that clothing that you no longer wear, clothing that is yesterday’s news, clothing that serves as a constant reminder that you’re carrying a ‘few’ extra pounds, even clothing that has passed its prime and has worn out – bring it all down to MissionFest and help us fill the bus.  We’ll sort it, give away the best, and recycle all the rest.  And – you’ll have played out a role in Missions!  How much better can it get than that!

James 1:22 - But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

2013 – What a beginning!

2013 – What a beginning!

We couldn’t have seen a better ‘kick-off’ to 2013!  On January 1st, we had our annual Christmas/New Year’s dinner for the community around the Mission, an area that many homeless people call ‘home’.  We served about 350 meals (over 3 sittings), and all 350 heard the good news of Jesus Christ during our 3 chapel services (one before each sitting).  Of those 34 made decisions for Christ, most of them being ‘first-time decisions’!

We rejoice in the work that God did in the lives of so many.  We’re also very thankful for all those who helped to make this New Year’s Day so meaningful for so many people.  Volunteers, donors – all contributed so much through the giving of their time and resources.  You helped to make the day such a blessing.  Thank you!

Psalm 77:13-14 - …Who is so great a God as our God?  You are the God who does wonders…

An event – plus!

An event – plus!

It seems that it’s happening more and more.  An individual holds an event, and adds an ‘element’ to it.  They’ll have a birthday party, and invite everyone to bring a non-perishable item for those in need at UGM; they’ll celebrate an anniversary, and invite people to make donations to UGM rather than buy gifts; they’ll plan a luncheon, and invite everyone to take part in a silver collection, with the proceeds going to their favourite charity (UGM, of course!).  We’re so thankful for these expressions of kindness and help.  It seems that, as people celebrate the occasion at hand, or attend the event of interest, part of the celebration is knowing that they’re helping others who are in need.  Thank you – and keep it going!  It’s a great help to us at the Mission.

Hebrews 13:16 - But do not forget to do good and to share, for with such sacrifices God is well pleased.

Yeah!

Yeah!

This morning (November 26th) in chapel, one of our ‘men in residence’ shared a few thoughts as he was advancing from Phase 2 to Phase 3.  How encouraging to hear of the work of God in the lives of the men who have come to us looking for help!  He shared of the good things God has been doing, and then closed with a couple of meaningful verses.  One of them was Romans 8:28, and as he began to quote it, one of the other residents pumped his fist in the air!  God’s Word makes a difference.  How excited it is to hear – and see – the truth of that!

Romans 8:28 - And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

What a way to celebrate! (Part 2)

What a way to celebrate! (Part 2)

In the last posting, we noted that the Charis Centre has just celebrated its 3rd birthday (at the beginning of October).  And wouldn’t you know it – a local business decided to usher in the occasion with an amazing ‘fireworks’ display.  OK, maybe that wasn’t the intent, but the timing was pretty good!

That amazing display did create some difficulties, though.  The ladies of the Charis Centre were evacuated for an evening, and spent the night sleeping at one of our other locations, the Family Life Centre.  Fortunately, all things considered, everything went pretty smoothly, and the ladies were able to return ‘home’ the following morning.

Ephesians 3:20-21 - Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

What a way to celebrate!

What a way to celebrate!

It’s hard to believe that the Charis Centre just celebrated its 3rd birthday!  It is encouraging to hear the stories of changed lives that have resulted from the help & hope that the Centre has provided in the name of Jesus Christ.  Many ladies have come to know Christ as their personal Saviour, a number of others have been reunited with children, and others have experienced the joy that freedom from addictions offer.  The struggles of the ‘past life’ continue for many, but God is good in what He has done!

Special thanks to the local business who celebrated the occasion with a spectacular display of ‘fireworks’.  More on that in the next blog!

Oops

Oops

We had an ‘oops’ moment in our latest edition of our Mission publication, Voices From The Street.  It may not match the ‘oops’ moment of the driver in the picture, but it’s an ‘oops’ nonetheless.  We announced plans to use part of the Charis Centre as a Missions Awareness Centre – a place where ladies could book in for a weekend and experience what our Mission is all about.  We think it was an informative announcement, but it ended on a sour note – we gave a wrong telephone number!  The proper # is (204) 998-2645.  Our apologies to the owner of the # that we printed in error – hopefully this blog will prevent a few calls from coming your way!

But, keep the calls coming our way!  The article with the ‘oops’ is found on page 7.  If you didn’t receive the fall issue, give us a call, and we’ll get this future ‘collector’s issue’ out to you right away.  And ladies - don’t forget to book your weekend into the Charis Centre for your Missions Awareness Weekend.

A Matter Of Perspective

A Matter Of Perspective

Not far from the back door of the Charis Centre is a fence, and on the other side of fence – a graveyard!  For most, not exactly the type of ‘neighbours’ we’d like to have!

But, for Selena, a resident of the Charis Centre, the setting was ideal for someone in a recovery program.  On those frequent days when the lure of leaving the program was strong, the cemetery served as a visual reminder of what returning to a life of addictions could lead to – the pathway to death.  Not wanting to end up there prematurely, it provided motivation to keep on the road to recovery.

By the way, Selena completed the program a couple of months ago, and moved out on her own at the beginning of September – those on the other side of the fence spoke into her life in a positive way!

Hebrews 11:4 – …and through it he being dead still speaks.

Why Is This Man Smiling?

Why Is This Man Smiling?
Well, it’s because he’s the driver of the nicest looking delivery van on the streets of Winnipeg – that’s why!  We are so thankful for how God provides, and in ways that we don’t always expect.  It started off with a grant from the Winnipeg Foundation; then we had a little additional help from Jim Gauthier Cadillac Buick, and then some great finishing touches from John Henry Creations and, voila, a practical thing of beauty – and all through God’s provisions!  God ‘delivered’…again!

James 1:17 – “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights…”
